Alternative Energy : part 1

The topic of alternative energy have always been my interest. The source of energy that we are using today is non-renewable energy which is originated from fossils. it has been the reason to so many things not only in engineering related field but also in politics and economy. the famous quote "the one who controls the worlds oil, controls the world" answer it all.

Talking about alternative energy the famous one would always be wind turbine, solar panels, and hydroelectric. Wind turbine is famous in the west where they could harness enough energy to run an entire city. There were also comments regarding the wind turbine which contributes towards bad view of a beautiful place.

Solar is well known as alternative energy in our country. Malaysia is strategic as we receive sunlight through out the year. the only drawback is the price of the whole set of the solar panel which contains photovoltaic(pv) panels, regulator, battery and inverter (depends on application). the break-even through point for those who buy solar panel is as long as 10 years which makes medium class people think twice in investing solar panel. According to my uncle's friend who is currently working in First Solar , the demand for solar is higher than the production capacity of the company. for those who already done the math, would certainly invest in solar panels. Spain has the largest solar power plant in the world runned by Sun Power. the sun based power plant in seville spain

sunlight is reflected from more than 600 mirrors to a tower which will turn it to electrical energy(it actually heats water which would then turn into steam which runs into a turbine which would then turn into electric). if im not mistaken the system could generate almost 10Megawatts. In Germany there is a place which runs 100% on solar.they even sell extra energy by returning it back to the grid.(i have forgetten the place and the UTP's internet is not allowing me to search.)
